UNISON GRANTS FOR TRADE UNION OR LABOUR STUDIES COURSES

Thinking of taking up a trade union or labour studies course?

Please see below for information on the grants UNISON members can apply for if you are looking to study a Trade Union or Labour Studies course this year.

UNISON has three types of bursary to support members on these courses:

  • One bursary of up to £1000 is available for full-time residential study at specific adult education colleges for a trade union and labour studies or a women's studies diploma.
  • Flexible bursaries for full or part-time study up to BA/BSc level: the size of the award depends on course fees and costs and the number of applicants. Around 15 bursaries are available. In addition, Northern College offers some free places to UNISON members on its part-time diploma in labour studies and this bursary could be used towards the cost of travel to the weekend/one-week residential schools. Contact Northern College or e-mail mailto:Sheila.Robinson@northern.ac.uk for more information on this course.
  • Six bursaries of up to £1000 for full or part-time masters degree study are available to support members on trade union and labour studies courses. There is one Adam Grierson bursary for a member employed in the health service, one Ruth Elliott bursary for a women member and four trade union or labour studies masters degree bursaries that are open to all activists.

If you have any questions, email mailto:learning&organisingenquiries@unison.co.uk or call 0207 551 1116.

UNISON is working in partnership with the County Council to promote the Workplace Learning Scheme. This has been set up as a result of the Government’s commitment to workforce training and development, and the latest Employment Act gives UNISON Workplace Learning Advisors a number of statutory rights to time off for training and duties. However, we do need many more volunteers. The aim of this joint initiative with the County Council is to promote learning in the workplace by

  • encouraging colleagues, helping to make learning an option for everyone
  • raising awareness of learning opportunities
  • offering guidance about routes into training and development

· assisting with enrolments and award events · helping to identify gaps in provision and ways to deliver learning in a style and at a pace to suit learners. · encouraging demand for learning from within the workplace Regular meetings are held and the Branch is on hand to offer support and guidance when needed. If you would like any further information on this very worthwhile role please get in touch with Jane Barnes on (01245) 354044 or Paul Everett (number below).

We look forward to hearing from you!
