Q1. Will we, as residents of Essex, be able to vote on these proposals?

No, Essex County Council will not be consulting the residents of Essex.

Q2. What effect will this outsourcing have on my services?

We don't have a clear idea as yet, although every resident will eventually feel and see the effects of a private company looking after their services.

Q3. What services will it affect?

We are unsure as yet – it could be “any or all”

Q4. Will the County Council still exist if I need to complain?

Yes, but it is possible that all the services could be carried out by contractors. There may be a very limited staff retained by the Council for the public to complain to.

Q5. Surely my council tax will be reduced if there is no County Council?

There is no guarantee of this Even if the Council were to be completely abolished the additional costs of the successors would probably lead to higher rather than lower council tax bills, despite their promises! The contractors appointed will want to make profits and pay shareholder bonuses so costs and council tax are more likely to go up!

Q6. Why should I care?

There may be fewer jobs in Essex, the local economy will therefore suffer and there is likely to be less accountability to Essex residents. The contractors main aim is to make a profit.

There is also a real possibility that the new company could take services abroad! This would mean less local jobs and if you need to make a complaint or have a query about the service, you may need to call overseas!

Q7. What can I do to help fight these proposals?

Write to your MP or County Councillor (a model letter is on this website), send a postcard to Lord Hanningfield, the Leader of the Council, (phone the Branch Office – 01245 354044 for a supply), sign our on-line petition and tell your family and friends.
